I recently had a conversation about the importance of teaching respect in schools. While I agree that respect matters, I don’t believe it addresses the root of the issue on its own.

When students are taught empathy and compassion—first for themselves, and then for others—mutual respect develops naturally. Without those foundational skills, “respect” can become a demand rather than a shared value.

Our Mindful Education in the Schools program supports this work by helping students build self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and connection—skills that strengthen classrooms and school communities as a whole.

I recently had a conversation about the importance of teaching respect in schools. While I agree that respect matters, I don’t believe it addresses the root of the issue on its own.

When students are taught empathy and compassion—first for themselves, and then for others—mutual respect develops naturally. Without those foundational skills, “respect” can become a demand rather than a shared value.

Our Mindful Education in the Schools program supports this work by helping students build self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and connection—skills that strengthen classrooms and school communities as a whole.
