The BS Box Part I

Recently, my life turned upside down. I had this amazing plan for myself and my family.  It felt like “beautiful, magic. Wondrous to behold.” And then, like Francis the fish for Professor Slughorn- poof- it was gone.

“But that’s life, I suppose, you go along and then suddenly- poof!” JK Rowling, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

If you’ve ever been in a spot where the rug was pulled out from under you- maybe for the first time or the numeranth time-, you may know the feeling of being in a bubble on water, just trying to stand up and get to shore without springing a hole or popping completely. But the moment you even stand, a wave comes crashing against you, knocking you down. And the pattern repeats.

Just like Slughorn expressed sadness and grief over the loss of a favored fish, sadness, grief and self-doubt crept in your mind. You, like me, started asking reflective questions about the situation- questions you may never get the answer to- trying to find the rational in the irrational and the solution amongst the broken. You may have started telling yourself certain things.  Things that weren’t necessarily true, but seemed to match your perception at that time. The incidents or situations in question may be an action you committed or may  not have had anything to do with you and everything to do with someone else’s decision or choice.

It’s almost like your mind tried to alter reality- like a memory had been tampered with- and you began to live your life according to those new rules, new beliefs, new expectations. Everyone’s experience is so unique. I can’t even specify an example because it would exclude so many.

We need to take time to recognize what is true and what is not. Hence, the Bullshit Box.
